Unravel the mysteries of astro navigation, use a sextant, ocean passage making, worldwide meteorology and electronic navigation aids. This course is for those aspiring to blue water cruising and is ideal for holders of the Yachtmaster Offshore certificate who are preparing for their first ocean passage.
The earth and the celestial sphere; Practical guide to use and care of sextant at sea; Meridian altitudes; Sun, star and other sights, ocean passage planning.
The course takes approximately 40 hours to complete with an assessment of 2 parts taken in one sitting of 2 hours.
- Course Overview: Advanced training for more experienced skippers.
- Previous experience required: Coastal and Offshore Sailing.
- Assumed Knowledge: Navigation to Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster Offshore theory standard.
Ability after the course: Background knowledge to skipper a yacht on ocean passages.

Invigilated Assessments.
Invigilation may be required for all theory courses if they are to be used commercially. These can be offered for free to anyone who books an online course with us and who requires an invigilated assessment here at Sailing School Brittany. We can also arrange invigilated assessments elsewhere in the world, at a cost.
The Ocean course assessment will need to be invigilated to avoid completing a further theory paper during the oral CoC examination.
